Adjust your System Restore! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator

As system restore can be really useful for you in case your windows configuration gets mess up it can also compromise the performance and the life of your hard drive. It will take you about a minute to adjust and not doing it will cost you hours in the long run, so please take a minute now and do it!Here are the instructions:

1. - Right click on My Computer icon My Computer icon and select properties Right click properties this will bring you to the System Properties Window.

2. - Click on the System Restore tab.

3. - Slide the Disk Space Usage to the minimum System Restore Window as you can see in this case we brought the slider to the minimum because is a big hard drive 500 GB, but in case your hard drive is 15 to 40 GB don't bring the slider under 1 GB as you need this space to have a good amount of system restore points in case that you need to restore your computer at certain point.

4. - After you selected the amount of disk space that you want to use click Apply then Ok and you are done!

As you can see on this window you can also turn off System Restore by checking the little box at the top of the window, if you never use System Restore you can go ahead and disable this service. But I suggest keeping it on as it can save your windows configuration at anytime just make sure you are not using 30 GB of your hard drive for these files as is useless.

Keeping the house clean! PDF Print E-mail

How can I really clean my computer from unused files!

From the day you start your windows for the first time, your operating system start creating new files based on the most frequent task that you perform every day, even when you install a new program or just by restarting the computer.

These are the most common files that get accumulated on your computer and that after some time will make your system heavier and slower:

  • Temporary Internet Files, History, Recently opened URLs and Cookies (websites you browse)
  • Temporary files and Log files. (Programs that you install)
  • Recycle Bin (Programs that you deleted)
  • System Restore Points (These points allow you to bring the computer back in time, in case something is not working properly)
  • Third-party application temporary files and recent file lists (Other Programs than Windows like: Firefox, Media Player, Lime wire, Nero, Google Toolbar, Netscape, Office 2003, Adobe Acrobat, Flash Player, WinRAR, WinAce, WinZip and others…
  • My Recent Documents (files that you recently opened like Word documents, excel, pictures, videos, Pdf, etx..)
  • The Clipboard (When you perform a copy and paste)
  • Memory dumps, Check Disk File Fragments and Windows log files.
  • Old Prefetch data (The programs that you access the most will create a prefetch file, in order to access it faster.
  • Windows size and location, tray notification cache, Menu order Cache (all these are the way you configure your windows and your menus).
  • Hotfix Uninstallers (Every time you install a windows hotfix or a security update these little files get created and chances are you’ll never uninstall one of these.
  • As you can see it can become easily 1, 2 or 3 Gigabytes of information that is just taking crucial space in your hard drive. I will suggest that you clean all these files at least once every month. If you have the right tool to do this it could take you only a minute of your time.

I strongly suggest using a free program called CCleaner as it can make that task really easy for you. You can download it from: http://www.ccleaner.com.

You can also use a tool after CCleaner that comes with every windows called “Disk Cleanup”, you can find this by right clicking on your hard drive icon under “My Computer” and hitting properties, then click on Disk Cleanup, check all the boxes and click ok. This process could take some time especially if you haven’t done it in a while.

Good luck keeping your windows clean!

Spybot - Search and Destroy 1.62 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator

There is major improvements on the new version of Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.62. But the main reason why is still recommended to install this program in your computer is immunization.

I personally urge you to install this program, download any available updates,"immunize" your system and perform a search and destroy.

Among the main features the program can repair (Registry), Winsock LSPs, ActiveX objects, browser hijackers and BHOs, PUPS, computer cookies, trackeware, homepage hijackers, keyloggers, tracks, trojans, spybots, revision, and many more malwares. It can also to some extent protect a user's privacy by deleting usage tracks like tracking cookies. Spybot-S&D also includes an "Immunize" feature to block the installation of spyware before it occurs e.g. by modifying the hosts file. Another tool included in Spybot-S&D is a file shredder, for the secure deletion of files. Spybot-S&D is not intended to replace anti-virus programs, but it does detect some common trojans.

They also added a very important module called anti-rootkit, this module alone can prevent you of having a lot of trouble.

The TeaTimer module can be optionally enabled, but I do not recommend this as the frequent pop-ups can get annoying after a while, this module gives real-time protection from undesirable registry changes, but this feature should be covered by your antivirus software without your intervention. Registry changes normally are made when programs are installed, uninstalled or updated, so random changes can indicate the presence of malicious software.

Some programs that you download from the web, specially those that are free, come with attached spyware or adware and refuse to run when the malicious software is removed; the version 1.62 of spybot replace the spyware binaries with dead dummies in order to disable the malware. If you are trying to install a program and it doesn't install properly it might conteins some form of malware.

Usually updates are released every week along with some modules that where improuved live better heuristics algorithms.

I have been repairing computers for more than 10 years and in every computer I ever worked on, I always installed Spybot as a complement for spyware protection.

You can download the new version by clicking here

Enjoy a Safer internet.
